CHAPTER TWELVE

She wanted answers. Well, she deserved some. But it would likely have been easier going if his head wasn’t pounding and he wasn’t seeing double.

Although two of Trish was not necessarily a bad thing. She’d saved his life. He was confident of that. All he basically remembered was the heat from the explosion, the force of it knocking him back, falling, pain and then nothing.

Except for that his very last thought had been of her. And a prayer that somehow she had escaped injury and would follow his orders to get the hell out of there.

Instead, she’d gone overboard and dragged his sorry hide out of the water. He’d been unconscious, yet he’d heard her. Had heard the panic in her voice. The need. And that was what had pulled him back from the edge, had allowed him the strength to dispel the water in his lungs.

He would answer her question, but first, she needed to know a few things. “Earlier today, I received a text. It was a picture of you, with blood on your face, tied up, with a gun to your head.”

She nodded slowly. “I didn’t know who they were sending it to.”

“They wanted a trade. Me for you.”

“And you said yes?”

“Of course.”

“But you didn’t contact the police? Why?”

This was where it got complicated. He must have hesitated for too long because she slapped her hand down flat on the table. “Do not lie to me. Please.”

He nodded. “First of all, they didn’t give me an exact location. They told me to return to Missouri and that I would get further instruction. So I didn’t know where to send the police. Even if I had, I wouldn’t have taken the chance that they’d screw it up. Not when your life was at stake.”

“Where were you?”

“They thought I was in Italy. I had been but I’d left as soon as I was informed of Milo’s death. I was in the States hours before they expected me. The element of surprise was in my corner.”

“How did you find me?”

This was going to be hard on her. But she’d asked him not to lie. “I contacted your brother-in-law, Bray Hollister. I wanted to know what he knew about your absence. I figured you’d told Summer and that she’d probably told him. I didn’t want to go directly to Summer if I didn’t have to.”

“She’s pregnant.”

“I know,” he said. He smiled. “I’m happy for her.”

She gripped her head in her hands as if holding her brains in. “This is surreal. You know all about my life and I know nothing about you.”

There was nothing much he could say about that. “Bray said that you were at Heelie Lake and that you’d rented a cottage based on a recommendation from M.A. Fikus. I went to see her and... Well, you know that part. I still didn’t know exactly where you were but I headed for Heelie. I got a lead that Bernie Wilberts owned a lot of cottages in the area and I wanted to identify his properties.
